Dr. Carlson began his ministry at Calvary Baptist Church on Sunday, September 1, 2019. Before being called to Calvary, he was a tenured Associate Professor of Chemistry and Physics at Belhaven University. While serving college students, he also served as a chaplain at local companies in the Jackson, MS area through Corporate Chaplains of America. It was during that time that he felt God’s calling to be ordained into the gospel ministry. He was licensed and ordained at Brandon Baptist Church in Brandon, MS, and he served there until being called into full-time ministry at Calvary. He has been married to Rebecca for more than seventeen years and has three daughters and one foster son.
Personal Background
Philip J. Carlson was born in Pratt, Kansas and has lived in Kansas, Arkansas, Iowa, Texas, and Mississippi. He came to know Christ at the age of seven during a revival at First Baptist Church, Brinkley AR. He has been involved in many different ministries through the years including those ranging from the nursery ministry to the nursing home ministry. Dr. Carlson has a strong love of learning and is always seeking to learn something new. He reads widely, though almost always non-fiction works. He also enjoys leatherworking when time permits.
Academic and Professional Accomplishments
His research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed scientific journals (such as The Chemical Educator, The Journal of Physical Chemistry, and The Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology) and books (such as The Handbook of Photocatalysts), and has resulted in a U.S. patent (US7858552B2). Dr. Carlson has six earned degrees including a M.A. in Biblical Studies from Louisiana Baptist University, a M.B.A. from Belhaven University, and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Iowa State University.
